The problem
One of the most important influences of healthcare decision
making is the value that a certain treatment has: whether
that value is perceived by a payer trying to
conserve or control his limited budget, a healthcare
professional dedicated to providing what he or she
perceives to be the best treatment, or a consumer or patient
making their own healthcare choices.
An essential part of this influence is the cost or
cost-effectiveness of the treatment under review. With so many
countries establishing their own Health Technology Assessment
authorities, it is vital that all healthcare professionals
understand the basics of health economics and value assessments.
However, many individuals in healthcare find these concepts at best hard to understand and at worst, distasteful – putting a price on disease treatment can feel as if human life and the quality of that life have been reduced to an accounting equation. Concepts that are not clearly understood and put into context can easily be misinterpreted. There are huge benefits to be gained in understanding if communications are made in a format and context that is relevant to the audience – be they physicians, payers, nurses, pharmacists, or the public.
The solution
Rx Communications is a medical communications agency with an established reputation for making health economics concepts understandable and meaningful for a variety of target audiences. Rx, together with its sister health economic modelling company Greenflint, has therefore developed a series of booklets that help bring these concepts to life. The booklet series will cover such concepts as value, methods of health economics, literature analysis etc.
Currently there are seven booklets on offer. Five of these booklets are presented as Beginners Guides for healthcare professionals, medical students, physicians & clinicians; the intention is that this series will be expanded both into different disciplines, and in the depth of information offered, depending on customer need and feedback.
